Good morning:
Thank you all for your donations to Navidad sin Frío and the Christmas baskets for AST workers. We have surely made many people happy with these good deeds. Yesterday's Christmas Concert and Empty Bowls were a huge success. I hear the band performance was outstanding, and that parents were really impressed with the artwork of students and teachers in AST. What a wonderful way to end the year!!!
Since this is our last week before the quarter ends, it is important that we comply with everything, and keeping our agendas updated will help us wrap up our partial successfully. Please take a look at what we will be doing during the week...
6th Grade Math
A test on all the topics in the Fraction Number Theory unit will take place on Tuesday, December 14th. Divisibility rules, factors and multiples, prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, GCF, and LCM will be included ( since we needed more time to address the last topics, we didn't get to see simplifying fractions, so it will NOT be included) . Students may start reviewing their material with the exercises found in Chapter 3 of the book.
The binder will be checked on Wednesday December 15 for 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3; 6-4 will have theirs checked until Thursday, December 16th. The checklist was handed out so kids can start arranging them.
If students have been absent throughout the quarter, they might have missing assignments to turn in. Please check Powerschool, and if any M's appear, they must turn in their pending work. If they don't, these M's will then turn to 0's, and their final grade will be affected.

I hope all of you have a warm and peaceful Christmas holiday!! Enjoy!!!

Christmas Baskets
November 23, 2009
Dear Parents (Nursery – 12th):
As another holiday season nears, many of us will enjoy our time with loved ones and celebrate the joyous memories of the past year. As we give thanks for the blessings and gifts in our lives, we also have an opportunity to appreciate those people who make the American School outstanding, but who rarely get the recognition they deserve.
On behalf of all American Schools students, we would like to extend our gratitude to the maintenance workers, the bus drivers, the nannies and their families by preparing food baskets for them as gifts at Christmas. Students in each grade level are asked to contribute the following items:
Nursery Bar Soap 7th grade Ketchup
Pre-Kinder Detergent 8th grade Beans
Kinder Toilet paper 9th grade Cooking Oil
1st grade Rice 10th grade Maseca
2nd grade Pasta 11th grade Soup
3rd grade Sugar 12th grade Oatmeal
4th grade Tomato Paste
5th grade Cereal
6th grade Flour
Thank you for participating in this event, and for involving your children in the charitable activities of the American School. Please send the item with your child to his homeroom teacher (Pre School and Elementary School) and to their Class Advisors (MS / HS) before Friday, December 10. We hope that we can foster in all students a spirit of generosity and compassion which will, in the end, make our world a better place.
Sincerely,
Claudia Pereira

Good day everybody:
We will be having an early dismissal on Wednesday, so the AST staff can meet in their SACS committees. Please make sure to make the necessary arrangements.
I would like to wish good luck to the basketball teams who will be representing us in the ABSH tournament in San Pedro Sula. Go Eagles!!!
Please take a look at what we will be working with this week.
6th Grade
We have begun our fraction number theory unit. We started with divisibility rules, tricks or shortcuts that can help us check for divisibility without having to do the actual division. Please make sure you study and practice these at home. A video with the way they work has been posted, and students already have a hard copy of them.
We will also review prime and composite numbers, and use the concepts to find the prime factorization of any composite number. We will use the factor tree, as well as a factor table, to work them out. Check out the different links posted about these topics.
A quiz on divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers, and prime factorization, will take place on Tuesday, November 23. Students will also have a mini project assigned on them, too.

Dear parents and students:
Parent-Teacher conference will take place Tuesday, November 9. Conferences will be held at a first come, first serve basis. To assure meeting as many parents as possible, conferences will last a maximum of 10 minutes. If you consider you need more time to address your child’s performance, please set up an appointment at the Middle School Office.
Conferences will take place from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Due to the fact that teachers have several sections and the time arranged for the conference is limited, a meeting will be scheduled during the week if we don’t get to convene on Tuesday.
The American School is proud to host the AASCA Knowledge Ball this week. Teachers and students will actively participate in this event, which will gather more than 150 guests from different Central American Schools. Let's make sure to make them feel welcome and wish them all good luck!!
Please take a look at important information regarding the class...
6th Grade Math
An algebra test will take place on Wednesday, November 10 for 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3. 6-4 will have the test on Thursday, November 11. The topics include order of operations, making a table to evaluate and graph an equation, and translating expressions. Please make sure to use the links to the left of my blog to review, as well as book pages 24 and 315. We will do a review sheet Monday, in case questions or doubts need to be addressed.

Good day everybody:
It's feels like we just started the school year, yet we are already in November!! Pretty soon we will start decorating Christmas trees and baking cookies!! Yeah, Santa is on his way!!
A picture authorization form has been sent out to parents. You can find the link on the right side of my blog. Please note that the deadline has been changed to November 5.
Let's take a look at what will be happening this week.
6th grade Math
We will continue with our Algebra unit. The order of operations project and quiz have already been checked and grades are already posted in Powerschool. I will be returning these this week. In the quiz, many students made a lot of basic Math mistakes, having to do mostly with multiplication and division facts. Take the time to look at the quiz and see where your mistakes are. Review multiplication and division facts if you have to, so you are not slowed down anymore!!
We have also graphed equations using an input and output tables. We will wrap things up this week by translating mathematical expressions.
An Algebra test will be given next week, probably on Tuesday, November 8th. Make sure to include that in your agendas.

Good morning students and parents:
I hope you have a nice long weekend, we definitely need that extra day to relax and rest. Please take a look at what we will be working with this upcoming week.
6th Grade:
We have two big assessments , which I had already communicated to students on Wednesday. The "Order of Operations" mini project is due Tuesday, October 27. They need to make their own strategy to remember order of operations and must present their work in a bumper sticker format. Don't forget to include the rubric!!
We will also have a quiz on order of operations this week. 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3 will have the quiz on Wednesday, October 27, and 6-4 will take it on Thursday, October 28. We already discussed the pop quiz and some mistakes that we need to avoid, specially dealing with exponents.
We will then continue working with functions and how to graph them.
Have a great long weekend!!

Good morning everybody:
We are starting the 2nd quarter this week. Please make sure you take a look at your everyday supplies and make sure you have a complete school box. If you have all your requested supplies, you will be able to take full advantage of your instruction and learning. It is very frustrating to try to work if you don't have something as basic as a pencil or marker. Not only do you slow down, you can also become a class disruption.
This Tuesday we will have a late start; students will begin their school day at 9:30 am. They will follow a special schedule that day, so they will still see all of their teachers.
AASCA Basketball tournament will take place this week as well. Let's show our Eagle pride by being good hosts and showing sportsmanship at all times!!
6th Grade
We started working with order of operations last week. Since this can be a very tricky skill to learn, make sure you practice daily and that you do not rush through your work. Watch the videos I have posted so you can remember the PEMDAS acronym and take a look at examples as well.
You will be assigned an order of Operations project this week.

We are a few weeks away from the end of the 1st quarter, so it is extremely important that students use their agendas accurately. Many projects and assessments will be happening before the partial closes, so make sure you plan accordingly.
6th Grade Math
We will be reviewing range, mean, median, and mode. We will take a look at what they are and how to find them. We will also decide which is the best one to use depending on a given situation. A quiz on these topics will take place on Tuesday, October 5th.
Have a great week,

Hello parents and students:
A well-deserved break is just around the corner. I hope all of you use these days off to rest and enjoy with the family. Please take a look at what we will do these two days this week.
6th Grade Math
Students started in class a mini project on their Mountain Math cycle. This project is due tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14. Don't forget to look at the rubric so you know exactly what you are expected to do in your assignment.
A test had been scheduled for tomorrow, however, we are still working on the skills of converting fractions, decimals and percents. Therefore, we will have the test when we come back from our Independence break. I'll let you know the new date next week.
Students will need their Math book tomorrow, so please bring it with you!!

Hello everybody:
Progress reports are just around the corner. All teachers will have their grades posted by this Friday. Please keep in mind that the final grade that appears is a temporary grade, that will be modified as new grades are included in the remaining weeks of the quarter. Also consider the categories that have been used to obtain this temporary grade as well, as not all categories have been necessarily used up to now.
6th Grade
We started working with decimals, fractions and percents last week. We established similarities and differences among them using a Venn diagram, but pretty much stated that they are three ways to represent the same value. We will practice rules to convert them from one to the other and a conversion chart has already been given out to the students. This chart needs to be studied, as a pop quiz about it will take place this week.
A test on all topics covered will take place next Tuesday, September 14th.

August 23-27
Dear parents and students:
Thank you for attending last Thursday's Open House. It was nice to see some familiar faces, and get to know some new parents as well. Important highlights that we discussed were the grading system , and how you can find the different blogs and wikis using the American School's site.
6th Grade Math
We will continue reinforcing our rules and routines, however, discipline chart and classroom expectations will be put into use this week.
We already reviewed forms of expressing numbers previously seen in Elementary. We will work a little with scientific notation and number word form, which are newly introduced skills regarding expression of numbers. We will go over ordering and comparing whole numbers and decimals as well.
Make sure binder is being arranged as students get more copies and documents. It will make it easier for the end of the quarter binder assessment!
We will be working on a project this week during the block. Make sure students bring old newspapers, glue, scissors and white paper. 6-3 needs the materials on Thursday, 6-2 and 6-4 on Friday and 6-1 next Monday
A quiz has been scheduled for next Tuesday, August 31st. Topics will include everything we have covered up to now.

August 16-20
Good morning:
This week we will continue adjusting ourselves to the rules and routines established in each class. Make sure you keep putting your best effort forth, this way you will guarantee a successful school year.
6th Grade Math
Last week, we organized ourselves for the class. We took a look at academic and social expectations by reading the syllabus; students provided me with input on their feel for the class with some journal prompts, and we got the binder ready and set to go. If your child has not signed the syllabus and/or filled in the student information sheet, please do so ASAP, as these are their first homework assignments!!!
We will begin with our content this week, which will include place value and forms of expressing whole numbers and decimals. We will review standard, word and expanded forms of numbers, and will introduce scientific notation and number word form.
Please remember you can keep track of our daily assignments by going to my wiki ( link is provided here in the blog) and taking a look at our Google calendar.
Have a great week,

Mrs. Hesse's Wiki
Dear Parents and students:
Posted at the upper right hand corner of the blog, you will find a link to my wiki. I will be using this space for several purposes.
First, the wiki will provide you with back-up regarding assignments. An assignment calendar is posted, which will display daily assignments. Also, if a project is given, you will find the link to the project's instructions and rubric on the wiki. Therefore, if a students was absent, he/she can still have the information available. The categories on my wiki labeled as 6th grade and Cívica will be mainly used for this goal.
This space will also be used to establish interactive communication and learning with students. I will be instructing them on how to do this pretty soon. Math 6-1, Math 6-2, Math 6-3, Math 6-4 and Cívica are the links that will be used for this purpose.
I hope to meet many other instructional objectives as well. Make sure you check the wiki often, especially if the blog states important stuff is going on. If you take a look today, you will find the syllabus for each class.
Thanks a lot!!Mrs. Hesse
