August 30 - September 3

Hello everybody:

We are starting a new week, packed with different activities. 6th graders will go through their first STUCO elections...good luck to all candidates, and regardless of who wins, let's make it a great year for everyone!!! Formal assessments will take place as well, through quizzes, tests or projects, so make sure you update your agendas!!

6th grade:
Students started working on their Newspaper Numbers project already. This individual project is due Monday, August 30 for 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. 6-1 will turn it in until Tuesday, August 31.

As announced, a quiz on the different topics covered until now will take place on Tuesday, August 31. (6-1 will have it until Wednesday, September 1st). These topics include:
* Place value for decimals and whole numbers
* Standard, word, and expanded forms for decimals and whole numbers
* Ordering and comparing whole numbers and decimals

You may use pgs. 4-5, and 40-41 to review these skills!!

The pop quiz kids took last week can give them an idea of what this quiz will be like. It should be already filed in their binder!!

Cívica:
Los proyectos individuales sobre la clasificación de la familia son para entrega el día Martes 31 de Agosto!! Esta semana hablaremos sobre la desintegracion familiar y el matrimonio. Un nuevo proyecto se asignará la próxima semana!

Have a great week,

August 23-27

Dear parents and students:

Thank you for attending last Thursday's Open House. It was nice to see some familiar faces, and get to know some new parents as well. Important highlights that we discussed were the grading system , and how you can find the different blogs and wikis using the American School's site.

6th Grade Math
We will continue reinforcing our rules and routines, however, discipline chart and classroom expectations will be put into use this week.

We already reviewed forms of expressing numbers previously seen in Elementary. We will work a little with scientific notation and number word form, which are newly introduced skills regarding expression of numbers. We will go over ordering and comparing whole numbers and decimals as well.

Make sure binder is being arranged as students get more copies and documents. It will make it easier for the end of the quarter binder assessment!

We will be working on a project this week during the block. Make sure students bring old newspapers, glue, scissors and white paper. 6-3 needs the materials on Thursday, 6-2 and 6-4 on Friday and 6-1 next Monday

A quiz has been scheduled for next Tuesday, August 31st. Topics will include everything we have covered up to now.

Have a great week!

August 16-20

Good morning:

This week we will continue adjusting ourselves to the rules and routines established in each class. Make sure you keep putting your best effort forth, this way you will guarantee a successful school year.

6th Grade Math
Last week, we organized ourselves for the class. We took a look at academic and social expectations by reading the syllabus; students provided me with input on their feel for the class with some journal prompts, and we got the binder ready and set to go. If your child has not signed the syllabus and/or filled in the student information sheet, please do so ASAP, as these are their first homework assignments!!!

We will begin with our content this week, which will include place value and forms of expressing whole numbers and decimals. We will review standard, word and expanded forms of numbers, and will introduce scientific notation and number word form.

Please remember you can keep track of our daily assignments by going to my wiki ( link is provided here in the blog) and taking a look at our Google calendar.

Have a great week,

Mrs. Hesse

Welcome to Math and Civics class!!

Hello everybody!! Welcome to a new schoolyear, one that will surely be exciting and fun!! My name is Karen Hesse, and I will be teaching Math and Cívica this year!!

Kids will be getting all the necessary information about the class through the syllabus, which will be given to them during the first couple of days. Rules and routines will be established during class, so students must be very attentive!!

Getting ready for the class will be their homework for the week. Some of the homework will include: reading syllabus with their parents and making sure it gets signed, bringing in materials and supplies, and covering textbooks, preferably, by next Monday.

News about the class will be posted every Monday. This will help you keep track of homework, projects, and assessment dates. Feel free to comment or e-mail me if necessary.I'm sure we will have a very successful year!!

Mrs. Hesse's Wiki

Dear Parents and students:

Posted at the upper right hand corner of the blog, you will find a link to my wiki. I will be using this space for several purposes.

First, the wiki will provide you with back-up regarding assignments. An assignment calendar is posted, which will display daily assignments. Also, if a project is given, you will find the link to the project's instructions and rubric on the wiki. Therefore, if a students was absent, he/she can still have the information available. The categories on my wiki labeled as 6th grade and Cívica will be mainly used for this goal.

This space will also be used to establish interactive communication and learning with students. I will be instructing them on how to do this pretty soon. Math 6-1, Math 6-2, Math 6-3, Math 6-4 and Cívica are the links that will be used for this purpose.

I hope to meet many other instructional objectives as well. Make sure you check the wiki often, especially if the blog states important stuff is going on. If you take a look today, you will find the syllabus for each class.

Thanks a lot!!Mrs. Hesse
