November 29 - December 3

Good morning:

I hope you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving break. As Christmas time approaches, let's show the season's spirit by donating to Navidad sin Frío and contributing to the Christmas Baskets for AST's workers.

The end of the quarter is close by and we have to make sure we are able to finish up our semester smoothly and successfully. Please take a look at what we will be working on this week.

6th grade Math
We will continue with our unit on Fraction Number Theory. The mini project on prime factorization has been assigned and it is due on Wednesday, December 1 for 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3; 6-4 will turn it in until Thursday, December 2.

We will now work with finding least common multiples (LCM) and greatest common factor (GCF). We will take a look at the traditional way of working, and will introduce a new way, using a factorization table, as well.

Please be aware that a test on fraction number theory will take place on Tuesday, December 14th.

Cívica
Hemos dado inicio a nuestra nueva unidad, denominada Los Centros Escolares. Estudiaremos los aspectos mas importantes de nuestra querida escuela. Es necesario que los alumnos tengan a mano ciertas páginas del student handbook, ya que stas serán el material de apoyo en esta unidad.

Have a great week!!

Christmas Baskets

November 23, 2009

Dear Parents (Nursery – 12th):

As another holiday season nears, many of us will enjoy our time with loved ones and celebrate the joyous memories of the past year. As we give thanks for the blessings and gifts in our lives, we also have an opportunity to appreciate those people who make the American School outstanding, but who rarely get the recognition they deserve.

On behalf of all American Schools students, we would like to extend our gratitude to the maintenance workers, the bus drivers, the nannies and their families by preparing food baskets for them as gifts at Christmas. Students in each grade level are asked to contribute the following items:

Nursery Bar Soap 7th grade Ketchup
Pre-Kinder Detergent 8th grade Beans
Kinder Toilet paper 9th grade Cooking Oil
1st grade Rice 10th grade Maseca
2nd grade Pasta 11th grade Soup
3rd grade Sugar 12th grade Oatmeal
4th grade Tomato Paste
5th grade Cereal
6th grade Flour

Thank you for participating in this event, and for involving your children in the charitable activities of the American School. Please send the item with your child to his homeroom teacher (Pre School and Elementary School) and to their Class Advisors (MS / HS) before Friday, December 10. We hope that we can foster in all students a spirit of generosity and compassion which will, in the end, make our world a better place.

Sincerely,

Claudia Pereira

The topics are: divisibility rules, factors and multiples, prime and composite numbers, and prime factorization. Remember students that you have several hand-outs that you need to study. You may use the Math book, pgs. 86 - 93, as well as the links on this blog, to help you review and drill these skills.

A prime factorization project will be assigned this week. Please bring materials ( construction paper, colors, glue, glitter, etc. ) on Wednesday to get started on it!!

November 15 -19

Good day everybody:

We will be having an early dismissal on Wednesday, so the AST staff can meet in their SACS committees. Please make sure to make the necessary arrangements.

I would like to wish good luck to the basketball teams who will be representing us in the ABSH tournament in San Pedro Sula. Go Eagles!!!

Please take a look at what we will be working with this week.

6th Grade
We have begun our fraction number theory unit. We started with divisibility rules, tricks or shortcuts that can help us check for divisibility without having to do the actual division. Please make sure you study and practice these at home. A video with the way they work has been posted, and students already have a hard copy of them.

We will also review prime and composite numbers, and use the concepts to find the prime factorization of any composite number. We will use the factor tree, as well as a factor table, to work them out. Check out the different links posted about these topics.

A quiz on divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers, and prime factorization, will take place on Tuesday, November 23. Students will also have a mini project assigned on them, too.

Have a great week,

Mrs. Hesse

November 8-12

Dear parents and students:

Parent-Teacher conference will take place Tuesday, November 9. Conferences will be held at a first come, first serve basis. To assure meeting as many parents as possible, conferences will last a maximum of 10 minutes. If you consider you need more time to address your child’s performance, please set up an appointment at the Middle School Office.
Conferences will take place from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Due to the fact that teachers have several sections and the time arranged for the conference is limited, a meeting will be scheduled during the week if we don’t get to convene on Tuesday.

The American School is proud to host the AASCA Knowledge Ball this week. Teachers and students will actively participate in this event, which will gather more than 150 guests from different Central American Schools. Let's make sure to make them feel welcome and wish them all good luck!!

Please take a look at important information regarding the class...

6th Grade Math
An algebra test will take place on Wednesday, November 10 for 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3. 6-4 will have the test on Thursday, November 11. The topics include order of operations, making a table to evaluate and graph an equation, and translating expressions. Please make sure to use the links to the left of my blog to review, as well as book pages 24 and 315. We will do a review sheet Monday, in case questions or doubts need to be addressed.

Cívica
Continuaremos con nuestra unidad de los derechos humanos. Trabajaremos en un cuestionario de las lecciones 4 y 5 del libro de texto.

Have a great week!
